Dr. Colleen Allison
Associate, Registered Psychologist
Dr. Allison received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Simon Fraser University. She is passionate about providing treatment to late teens (those aged 15-17), emerging adults (those aged 18 – 29) and other adults whose problems in living include anxiety, depression, trauma, psychosis, gender identity issues, relationship difficulties, and substance use. Her approach to understanding and treating client struggles is client-centred and integrative, strongly influenced by her research training in attachment patterns that reflect cognitive, behavioral, and emotional tendencies in close relationships. The psychotherapeutic treatments Dr. Allison integrates in her practice include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and compassion-focused practices. She loves nothing more than seeing clients develop an acceptance of themselves that empowers them to make positive changes in their lives. In her interactions with clients, she is genuine, thoughtful, empathic and playful.
When she is not practicing at Cornerstone, Dr. Allison is the Psychotherapy Lead at VGH Outpatient Psychiatry where much of her work is group-based. She holds the Certified Group Therapist designation of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. She is also a member of the Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood. Dr. Allison previously worked as a Psychologist both at the Provincial Youth Concurrent Disorders Program at BC Children’s Hospital, and at Tertiary Mental Health, Willow Pavilion at VGH. She belongs to a number of other professional associations including the Canadian Psychological Association, the Canadian Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies, and the International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis – US division. She is registered with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (Registration #2151).
