Dr. Janine Slavec
Associate, Registered Psychologist
Dr. Slavec uses an evidence-based (scientifically-supported) approach to assessment and treatment. This primarily includes cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and behavioural interventions, with elements of interpersonal psychotherapy and motivational interviewing. Working within a client-centred, personalized, and playful framework, Dr. Slavec collaborates with children, teens, and parents to boost confidence, increase stress resiliency, and overcome emotional and behavioural challenges.
Dr. Slavec completed her Ph.D. in Developmental-Clinical Psychology at the University of Maine. Working with researchers and therapists across clinics, hospitals, and schools, she specialized in the treatment of ADHD, behavioural problems, and emotion regulation difficulties for children and preschoolers. Dr. Slavec completed her residency and post-doctoral fellowship at BC Children’s Hospital, gaining experience in treating individuals with medical concerns (e.g., somatic concerns/somatization, sleep problems, chronic pain, coping with illness, treatment adherence, toileting), repetitive behaviors (e.g., tics), anxiety, OCD, and mood disorders. Dr. Slavec is also passionate about working with parents to promote their own coping and to help support their children’s adjustment.
In addition to her work at Cornerstone, Dr. Slavec is also a staff psychologist in the pediatric OCD program at BC Children’s Hospital, as well as a postdoctoral fellow in Medical Psychology. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Pediatric Psychology, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and Canadian Psychological Association. Dr. Slavec is registered with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (Registrant # 2353).
