Dr. Karina O’Brien
Associate, Registered Psychologist
Dr. O’Brien earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Manitoba. She works with teens (12 and up), young adults, and adults, and her practice includes those dealing with stress/anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating. She also enjoys working with teens and young adults navigating life transitions such as moves to high school or University.
Dr. O’Brien uses evidence-based methods such as cognitive behavioural therapy and behavioral therapy, and integrates other tools and strategies as needed to individualize treatment. She has a calm, warm, and person-centred style, and believes the therapeutic relationship is a key component of effective treatment.
Eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa, are often best treated using a family based approach. Dr. O’Brien is one of only a handful of therapists in BC who are fully certified by the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders to provide Family Based Therapy (sometimes called the “Maudsley approach”) for Anorexia Nervosa. Please visit this website to learn more about this approach.
Prior to joining Cornerstone, Dr. O’Brien was on staff in the Provincial Eating Disorders Program at BC Children’s Hospital, where she was involved in the treatment of children and youth with eating disorders, and provided clinical consultation and teaching to professionals around British Columbia. She is a member of the BC Psychological Association, and is registered with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (Registrant #01626).
