Dr. Robert Selles
Associate, Registered Psychologist
Dr. Robert Selles strives to help youth and their families gain more freedom from unpleasant thoughts, urges, emotions, and behaviours. In particular, he works with youth struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, repetitive behaviours (e.g., tics, hair-pulling, skin-picking), selective mutism, avoidant-restrictive eating, and emotional-behavioural difficulties (e.g., tantrums, oppositionality). Dr. Selles employs techniques that are strongly supported by research (e.g., exposure and response prevention, parent-management training, acceptance and commitment therapy) and tailors his approach to the individual/family. He has a genuine, direct, and active style that works to empower and coach youth and their families through the implementation of new skills with the ultimate goal of improving their lives.
Studying with leaders in the field, Dr. Selles has considerable training, clinical expertise, and research activity, including a number of scientific publications in the assessment and treatment of these conditions. Under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Storch, Dr. Selles completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of South Florida. His residency, in child-clinical psychology, was completed at Brown University. Following completion of his degree, Dr. Selles was recruited to Vancouver by Dr. S. Evelyn Stewart and subsequently awarded the Scholars of Excellence Fellowship by the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. The award provides Dr. Selles with ongoing support to conduct research and provide clinical service within the Pediatric OCD Program at BC Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Selles is affiliated with the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, Anxiety and Depression Association of America, and the International Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Foundation. He is registered with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (Registrant # 2352).
