Dr. David Schuberth
Associate, Registered Psychologist
Dr. David Schuberth is passionate about providing evidence-based (scientifically-supported) treatment to youth and families. His approach is firmly grounded in both cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP), with elements of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and solution-focused approaches. Dr. Schuberth takes a warm, playful, and client-centered approach that helps children and their caregivers feel heard while building skills to make meaningful and long-lasting changes in their lives. He particularly enjoys building trusting relationships with youth who present with challenging behaviours and who have had limited success with treatment in the past.
Dr. Schuberth recently completed his Ph.D. in clinical-forensic psychology at Simon Fraser University, with a focus on disruptive behaviour problems and at-risk youth. His dissertation research project involved developing and piloting a novel group-based intervention for pediatric OCD to help parents manage coercive/disruptive behaviours and reduce accommodation while promoting healthy coping. He previously earned his Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from the City University of New York (CUNY) John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Prior to joining Cornerstone, Dr. Schuberth completed his pre-doctoral residency through the Saskatchewan Health Authority in Saskatoon, SK. He previously completed clinical practica through the BC Children’s Hospital outpatient OCD and ADHD clinics as well as the Vancouver CBT Centre. As well, his training has included work with both incarcerated youth and youth on probation in the community. Through his diverse clinical training, he has gained experience in treating individuals struggling with OCD, ADHD, disruptive and aggressive behaviour problems, familial conflict, anxiety, selective mutism, mood disorders, and medical conditions (e.g., chronic pain, coping/adjustment, treatment adherence). Dr. Schuberth also collaborates with parents to promote their own coping and to help support their children’s adjustment.
In addition to his work with Cornerstone, he is also a Psychology Assessment Clinician at the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychology-Law Society, and the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services. He is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (#2827).
