Dr. Sophie Smit

Dr. Sophie Smit received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of British Columbia. She offers individual therapy services to children, youth, and parents, as well as psychoeducational assessments. She aims to work collaboratively with families to facilitate evidence-based treatment and is passionate about creatively tailoring approaches to the unique needs of each client. With a person-centred approach, she prioritizes creating a warm environment that is inclusive of all identities and meets clients where they are at.
Dr. Sophie has worked with children, youth and their parents across a wide range of mental health challenges. She has experience working with families of children and youth with ADHD, Autism, emotion dysregulation, anxiety (e.g., selective mutism, generalized worries, phobias, social anxiety), OCD, low mood, and difficulties with coping or adjustment. Her approach is grounded in a cognitive-behavioural framework and additionally draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, attachment principles, and a strengths-based perspective.
In addition to her work with Cornerstone, Dr. Sophie works on the Medical Psychology team at BC Children’s Hospital. In this role she provides assessment and treatment for children and families with medical concerns and associated challenges. Dr. Sophie’s research focuses on children with ADHD, including programs for parents and teachers that aim to support these children, as well as parent mental health considerations in these families. Dr. Sophie is a member of the Canadian Psychological Association, is currently registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists (registration #7587) and is in the process of registering in BC.
