Dr. Shira Segal

Associate

Dr. Shira Segal received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She completed her predoctoral residency at BC Children’s Hospital, with a focus on both mental health and medical psychology. In addition to working at Cornerstone, Dr. Segal is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Segal is in the process of registering with the College of Psychologists of BC.

Dr. Segal is passionate about working together with young children, adolescents, and families to help them reach their goals in therapy. She uses a client and family centred approach with a strong emphasis on providing highly individualized and evidence-based care (i.e., treatments with a strong scientific grounding) to best meet the needs of her clients. Dr. Segal primarily uses cognitive-behavioural therapy, though she often draws on attachment-based, relational, and emotion-focused principles to support the therapeutic process. She is passionate about empowering caregivers to recognize their strengths by supporting their parenting skills, with the understanding that strong caregiver-child relationships can be powerful and lasting agents of change.

Prior to joining Cornerstone, Dr. Segal has worked in hospital, community mental health, and private practice settings to provide assessment and treatment to youth with a range of emotional, behavioural, and medical concerns. At Cornerstone, Dr. Segal works with children and adolescents presenting with anxiety (e.g., worry, phobias, selective mutism, perfectionism), low mood, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress reactions, in addition to chronic pain and adjustment to/coping with medical conditions.
