Comprehensive Tic Treatment Program Options
Available to families living anywhere in BC, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Yukon
Evidence-based treatment services for children and youth with tics are available for all ages and presentations of tics with Dr. Tara Jukes and Dr. Melanie McConnell. Treatment includes both group and individual options, and ranges from parent education, consultation and support to direct intervention with children and youth, in addition to options for school consultation. A variety of in-person and virtual services are available. The most appropriate intervention will depend on your child’s age and presenting concerns, and will be decided collaboratively with our team. However the virtual Tic Workshop for Parents/Caregivers is recommended for all families as a starting point for treatment. Here are the most common treatment pathways to consider…

If your child is 7 years old or younger...
1. Register for the virtual Tic Workshop for Parents. This is usually the quickest way to access services.
2. Once you have attended the Parent Tic Workshop, you can schedule 1-2 individual follow-up appointments with Dr. Jukes or McConnell to help apply strategies to your specific situation and determine next steps for your family. These appointments are booked within 1 month of the workshop, can be virtual or in-person, and can include parents only or parents and children (where appropriate). These appointments are 50 minutes (parent only) or 80 minutes (parents and child) and billed at regular clinic rates.
3. For families who have participated in the Tic Workshop for Parents, Drs. Jukes and McConnell are available to provide a consultation with your child’s school team to support them in managing your child’s tics at school. There are minimal waits for these consult appointments. These appointments are offered virtually, are typically 30 - 50 minutes in length and are billed at regular clinic rates.
4. To be added to our waitlist for individual therapy, please complete this intake form. Research has shown that children as young as age 5 years can benefit from modified therapy for tics, and also that specific parenting strategies can help to reduce tics and tic-related challenges. Please note that the wait for individual services is usually much longer than for the workshop (and workshop follow-up consultations).

If your child is 8 - 13 years old and you live in the Lower Mainland of BC...
These appointments are booked within 1 month of the workshop, can be virtual or in-person, and can include parents only or parents and children. These appointments are 50 minutes (parent only) or 80 minutes (parents and child) and billed at regular clinic rates.
3. At the same time as registering for the Parent Tic Workshop, also request an in-person intake appointment for the next Tic Busters Group to determine if group-based Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is a good fit for your child. Research has shown that group CBIT is just as effective as individual CBIT and may offer additional benefits. This option is often quicker than waiting for individual services.
4. For families who have participated in the Tic Workshop for Parents and/or Tic Busters Group, Drs. Jukes and McConnell are available to provide a consultation with your child’s school team to support them in managing your child’s tics at school. There are minimal waits for these consult appointments. These appointments are usually offered virtually, are typically 30 - 50 minutes in length and are billed at regular clinic rates.
5. To be added to our waitlist for individual therapy, please complete this intake form. Please note that the wait for individual services is usually much longer than for the Parent Tic Workshop and Tic Busters Group.

If your child is 8 years or older and in-person appointments are impractical (e.g., due to distance)...
These appointments are booked within 1 month of the workshop, can be virtual or in-person, and can include parents only or parents and children. These appointments are 50 minutes (parent only) or 80 minutes (parents and youth) and billed at regular clinic rates.
3. During your individual consultation, speak with Dr. Jukes or McConnell about whether in-person intensive treatment may be suitable for your child. Intensives involve several hours of daily treatment scheduled over several consecutive days. Some out-of-town families prefer this option. A growing body of research has found that this form of intervention is just as effective as traditional CBIT.
4. For families who have participated in the Parent Tic Workshop, Drs. Jukes and McConnell are available to provide a consultation with your child’s school team to support them in managing your child’s tics at school. These appointments are offered virtually, are typically 30 - 50 minutes long and billed at regular clinic rates.
5. If you feel your child will be able to participate in therapy virtually, please complete this intake form to be added to our waitlist for individual services. Please add a note on your intake form if you would like to join a list of families to be notified when we offer virtual groups in the future. Research is increasingly demonstrating that CBIT can be effectively delivered virtually (individual and group) with similar outcomes as in-person treatment.
